Thyroid
The thyroid gland lies in the region of the mid-anterior neck, just below the larynx. It produces hormones that control the metabolism. Because of the individual nature of thyroid problems, Dr. Beutel prefers to personally discuss an individual's condition, treatment options, and follow-up.
Sometimes, the thyroid gland does not function as it should. If the cells respond abnormally, the thyroid may become large as it produces more and more cells, as a result of internal or external factors. This enlarged thyroid is called a goiter.
Other conditions can result from the thyroid producing too much or too little of the proper hormones. If your doctor diagnoses you with hypothyroidism, you may take medication to supplement your thyroid’s hormone production. Treatment for hyperthyroidism must slow the metabolism or remove the thyroid completely. In this case, surgery is one option to be considered. In other cases, growths form in the thyroid. Usually, these growths are benign, but sometimes they are cancerous and therefore can spread to other parts of the body. Surgery can be the best alternative for this condition.
