About Dr. Beutel

Dr. William D. Beutel, MD, FACSDr. William D. Beutel has been serving patients in the Charlotte area for over fifteen years. His practice is focused on the evaluation and surgical treatment of esophageal reflux (acid reflux), gastrointestinal problems and cancers, as well as thyroid and breast surgery.

Dr. Beutel received his surgical residency training at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. The hospital, one of the largest university-owned hospitals in the nation, is a tertiary care center serving the state of Iowa and surrounding states. He was an attending physician in the Department of Surgery for two years following residency before moving to North Carolina in 1986.

About Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopy is a minimally-invasive surgical technique in which the operation is performed partly or entirely through small incisions with the assistance of a tiny optical instrument with a light at the end (laparoscope). A live video feed of the internal organs is displayed on a monitor, and the surgeon uses a variety of thin tools to complete the procedure, often without the need for an open incision.

At times, there are a number of benefits to using laparoscopic surgery as an alternative to open surgery. Since the incisions are small, the scars are also small and much less conspicuous. Discomfort and pain is usually reduced, and the post-operative hospital stay shortened. Many patients recover within days and are able to return to work and their regular routines.

Dr. Beutel was one of the first Charlotte area surgeons to use laparoscopic techniques in abdominal surgery and has extensive experience in advanced laparoscopic surgery, especially relating to acid reflux syndrome. He considers it a worthy challenge to help improve the quality of life for many people through the proper diagnosis and treatment of acid reflux problems and biliary disorders, as well as other gastrointestinal conditions.
